Nanticoke man beaten and stuffed in his trunk dies

The family of Charles Eget, 64, meanwhile, remembered him as a devoted family man and kind-hearted person, saying they weren’t at all surprised to hear police say he was being a good Samaritan when he offered his attacker a ride. “That doesn’t surprise any of us. That is our dad,” said daughter Tammy Turner, 37. “We’ve all told him that it’s not always a good thing to be like that,” said another daughter, Sara Eget, 28. “But he was very old school and he believed in the best of everybody. He really didn’t see — I guess he just chose to see the best in everybody.” State police say Charles Eget encountered Bradley John Butler, 42, of 537 Linden St., Scranton, outside a diner across from Mohegan Sun Pocono in Plains Twp. and offered him a ride home the morning of Oct. 20. After diverting Charles Eget to a secluded spot in Fairmount Twp., Butler began punching him and took the wheel, telling Charles Eget to get in the back seat, police said. Butler got into a hit-and-run crash with a white construction van, causing Charles Eget to get upset and begin yelling about damage to the car, police said. Feeling scared and agitated, Butler pulled into a private driveway and attacked Charles Eget, hitting him with a tire iron, stomping his head and then stuffing him into the trunk before bashing his head several more times with a log, according to police. When the car later broke down along Interstate 78, Butler told a tow driver he had a body in the trunk, according to police. Butler told investigators he had been on methadone and panicked after the crash, police said. Butler remains jailed at the Lebanon County Correctional Facility, where he is being held on $1 million bail. Family members said Charles Eget, who was taken to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center after the attack, died Sunday evening. Butler, who was already charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and robbery charges, will be hit with criminal homicide charges as a result of the death, state Trooper David Beohm said.
